Crystal Palace vs Spurs Preview

Crystal Palace host Spurs in today’s early kick off, with the game at Selhurst Park set to get underway at 12pm. Crystal Palace are 17th in the table, while Spurs are fifth.

Crystal Palace are only outside the relegation zone on goal difference, and could really do with picking some points up today. They have been decent under Roy Hodgson, and looked like they would stay up comfortably at one point in my opinion. But things are still a bit of a struggle for them, and they’re more than likely going to be in a relegation battle right up until the end of the season. They were beaten 3-1 by Everton in their last league game, and haven’t managed a win in any of their last four. Today’s game is also the beginning of a tricky run of fixtures for them, as they play Man Utd, Chelsea, Huddersfield and Liverpool in their next four. I think it’ll be important for them to play well today and give their confidence a boost ahead of those games.

They haven’t been doing too badly at home, and will be looking to make it difficult for Spurs today. If they can keep it tight and try to hit on the break they have a chance. They need to do all they can to not concede an early goal, while also being effective going forward. They can cause Spurs problems today, but they’re going to have to be at their best if they want to pick up any points today.

Roy Hodgson said: “It was always going to be a very difficult game and I think even if could have had some of the 12 players and added to the ones we have got, which would give us a very good squad, it would still be a very tough game because whichever way you look at it we are a bottom of the table team at the moment and they are chasing, not only Champions League honours, but also second place in the league.

“I think that we are more than capable of giving them a very good game if we play the best football we can play as we did when we played at Wembley and lost 1-0, the problem is if we get further injuries in the game we are getting very short of experienced and quality players who can actually go in as it will be a lot of younger players from our under 23 squad, be a great opportunity for them but it will be a big ask for them to go and play against Tottenham in their first competitive game for the team.”

As Hodgson said, Palace are without 12 players today, so their squad will be quite stretched.

Spurs go into this one trying to climb above Chelsea and into the top four. A draw would move them ahead of the Blues on goal difference, for the time being anyway. Chelsea travel to Man Utd later today. Spurs will definitely be going out to win this one though, and they undoubtedly have the quality in their squad to do so. It’s going to be a tricky away game for them, but they’ll be disappointed if they don’t manage to win it. They followed their brilliant draw away to Juventus up with a draw away to Rochdale, so you never really know how they’re going to do.

Spurs’ league form has been quite good lately though, and they have come through a tricky run of fixtures well. They beat Man Utd and Arsenal at Wembley, and they got a good draw at Anfield against Liverpool. They’ll be looking to keep that up today and keep the pressure on the top four. Finishing in the top four this season will be very important for them, as they could do with having Champions League football when they move into their new stadium next season. I think they will finish in the top four once they keep playing the way they have been, because they have been quite impressive lately.

Mauricio Pochettino said: “Roy Hodgson is doing a fantastic job. It will be good to see him on Sunday and at the same time, we know this is a very tough game.

“For me, this is a game where we need to be ready to fight. It’s a battle and more than a game where you only play football.

“First of all we need to match them in all aspects, motivation and the capacity to fight and then try to play and develop our game.”

Toby Alderweireld could be left out as a precaution, but Lucas Moura could be handed his full Premier League debut for Spurs.

I think Spurs are clear favourites for this one, but it could be a tricky game for them. Going to Selhurst Park is never easy, and Crystal Palace will be prepared to fight for a result today. Spurs will have to be quite good to get the win today, but they’re more than capable of doing that. If they manage to play as well as we have seen them play recently, they shouldn’t have any problems.

The team news will be out in the next few minutes, and you’ll find that up here as well. Enjoy the game.
