David De Gea on his performance, Jose Mourinho and players needing consistency

David De Gea thinks this season has been his best one in a Man Utd shirt. He believes he has had a good season and says he feels good.

United’s ‘keeper has kept 17 Premier League clean sheets this season and is on his way to winning the Golden Glove for the first time. His nearest competitor is Man City’s Ederson, who has 15. With just four games to play you would imagine De Gea won’t be caught.

The Spanish stopper was also named in the Team of the Season, for the fifth time, and was nominated for PFA Player of the Year, but the prize was won by Liverpool’s Mo Salah.

When asked if this was his best season in an interview with Premier League Productions, De Gea said: “Yeah, I’m pretty pleased with my performance. It’s been a fairly complete, all round set of performances from me.

“I’ve felt good, felt fit and in good form physically throughout the season. Let’s hope that these last few games to go before the end of the season continue the form, then leading into the World Cup, which is an important time for Spain.”

De Gea went on to praise Jose Mourinho, and says the players need to find more consistency and play well over the course of a season.

“We’ve got a great manager,” he said.

“He’s very experienced, he’s won everything there is to win in the game. What he is really good at is transmitting his winning mentality to the group.

“However, at the end of the day, it’s down to ourselves – the players on the field. It is us who make the saves, create the chances and score the goals. So, as a group, we’ve got to get that level of consistency and quality throughout the season.”

United may be slightly disappointed with their season so far, but if they go on to win the FA Cup against Chelsea on May 19 I think they can be happy with it. Because Man City are so good, there’s simply no way anybody could catch them. United will be hoping to finish second and win the cup, and then they can have another crack at the title next year.

There is set to be more speculation surrounding De Gea’s future again this summer, as there seems to be every year. We’ll have the Real Madrid rumours everywhere again, but you can’t have the Premier League’s best goalkeeper and expect him to not be linked with other clubs. United will be doing all they can to hold onto him.
