Liverpool have confirmed that defender Joel Matip will more than likely require an operation on the thigh injury he sustained during Liverpool’s visit to Selhurst Park on Saturday, where they beat Crystal Palace 2-1.
Matip played the full 90 minutes of the game, but it was revealed afterwards that he will need to have a procedure on his thigh.
Matip’s operation will likely rule him out for the remainder of the season. The World Cup isn’t of concern to him because he plays for Cameroon and they didn’t qualify for the tournament.
The defender has played 25 Premier League games for Liverpool this season, scoring one goal.
His injury will likely mean that Dejan Lovren will partner Virgil van Dijk in the centre of Liverpool’s defence for Wednesday’s visit of Man City to Anfield. The pair will likely play the rest of the season together.
Jurgen Klopp is set to provide an update on the injury in his press conference this afternoon, where he will also give an update on the fitness of Adam Lallana, who was forced off at Selhurst Park just five minutes after coming on as a substitute.
