Fenway Sports Group have issued a statement on Liverpool’s official website clarifying that Philippe Coutinho will not leave the club this summer. In the short statement, they said:
We wish to offer clarity as regards our position on a possible transfer of Philippe Coutinho.
The club’s definitive stance is that no offers for Philippe will be considered and he will remain a member of Liverpool Football Club when the summer window closes.
I doubt this will stop all the talk about Coutinho leaving though, and I don’t think it will stop Barcelona from pursuing the player either.
In another twist to the story, Sky Sports say that Coutinho has handed in a transfer request.
They have quoted a ‘close family member’ of Coutinho as saying:
Philippe has tried very hard to find an amicable solution to this situation but to no avail.
He has tremendous love for the club and its fans, but like Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez have pointed out in the past, Liverpool does not let its players leave on amicable terms.
Where this will go from here is anybody’s guess, but the talk was that Coutinho wanted to join Barcelona but he wouldn’t push the matter and would stay if Liverpool were desperate to hold onto him. Has he now changed his mind and will agitate for a move away? Only time will tell.
Coutinho will miss Liverpool’s opening game of the Premier League season with a back injury. They travel to Watford tomorrow.
