The BBC’s David Ornstein has reported that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has turned down a move to Chelsea because he thinks he will be played as a wing-back, and wants to sign for Liverpool where he thinks he will be played in central midfield.
It was reported that he was on the brink of signing for Chelsea, with Arsenal and Chelsea agreeing a fee of around £40m, and he would be paid £220,000 per week. If that figure is correct, it would have surely doubled the 24 year old’s wages.
The report says that Liverpool won’t offer as much to Arsenal as Chelsea did, but surely Arsenal will sell the want away player for a bit less.
I’m still not convinced he will get a game in Liverpool’s midfield, with Can, Henderson and Wijnaldum playing really well there at the moment, while Coutinho and Lallana still have to return from injury. Liverpool also announced that Naby Keita will sign for them next summer.
If it is the case that he has turned down more money at Arsenal and Chelsea so he can play centre-midfield fair play to him, but maybe if he had real ambitions of playing every week he would have to look a bit further down the league.
We’ll see where this one goes, but with only 2 days of the transfer window remaining, they will have to act fast.
